Regional Language Marketing in India: A Bengaluru and Kochi Guide

Most Indian internet users prefer content in their own language. Here is how to choose languages, when to translate and when to transcreate, where AI tools help, and how to measure the result.

The short answer

Regional language marketing means creating content in the languages your customers think in, not just translating English. IAMAI and Kantar found 57% of Indian internet users prefer content in regional languages. Start with one or two languages your own data supports, have native writers transcreate hooks and offers, use AI translation and dubbing for scale with human review, and test each language against English.

Key takeaways

  • IAMAI and Kantar's Internet in India 2024 report found that 57% of internet users prefer to access content in regional languages.
  • The 2025 edition counted 958 million active internet users, about 548 million of them rural, and 588 million short-video viewers.
  • A Census 2011 analysis found 107 languages in Bengaluru, with Kannada spoken by 44.5%, Tamil 15%, Telugu 14%, Urdu 12% and Malayalam 3%.
  • Meta's Reels translation and dubbing added Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi and Kannada in January 2026, alongside Hindi; Malayalam was not included.
  • Bhashini, the Government of India's language platform, offers text translation across 22 Indian languages and speech services in 12.

Regional language marketing in India means planning, writing and producing content in the languages your customers prefer, not translating English copy at the end. It matters because most Indian internet users prefer their own language: IAMAI and Kantar found 57% prefer regional-language content. The practical approach is to pick one or two languages your own data supports, have native writers transcreate the parts that need persuasion, use AI for translation at scale with human review, and measure each language against English. From our studios in Bengaluru and Kochi, this is daily work rather than a trend.

What is regional language marketing?

Regional language marketing, also called vernacular marketing, is creating and distributing marketing in the Indian languages your audience prefers, adapted to local culture, references and buying habits. It covers social posts, video, ads, landing pages, WhatsApp messages, packaging and customer support, not just a translated website.

Why does regional language content matter in 2026?

Because the growth in Indian internet use is outside English-first, metro audiences. The IAMAI and Kantar Internet in India 2024 report found 57% of users prefer to access content in regional languages. The 2025 edition counted 958 million active internet users, with about 548 million in rural India growing nearly four times as fast as urban India, and 588 million people (about 61% of users) watching short-form video.

Platforms are moving the same way. In January 2026 Meta added AI translation and dubbing for Reels in Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi and Kannada, alongside Hindi and English, as Social Samosa reported. YouTube expanded AI auto-dubbing to all channels in February 2026 with 27 languages, per India TV News. When platforms invest in language, they are showing you where engagement is.

Which languages should a Bengaluru brand use?

Usually Kannada and English, with Tamil or Telugu where your data shows demand. An analysis of Census 2011 data by Shamika Ravi and Mudit Kapoor, reported by Asianet Newsable, found 107 languages in Bengaluru, with Kannada at 44.5% of speakers, Tamil 15%, Telugu 14%, Urdu 12% and Malayalam 3%. The census is old and the city has grown sharply, so treat these as directional; there is no single "Bengaluru language".

  • Kannada first for local trust. For neighbourhood businesses, civic-facing brands and anything sold across Karnataka, Kannada signals that you belong. It matters for signage, packaging and support too.
  • English for the professional workforce. Tech parks and startup corridors still run on English, often mixed with Hindi.
  • Tamil and Telugu where your data says so. If your CRM, store data or ad analytics show strong segments, build for them rather than guessing.
  • Code-mixing is normal. Kanglish and Hinglish captions often feel more natural than formal Kannada or Hindi. Test both.

Which language works for Kochi and Kerala?

Malayalam, written natively. Kerala is far more linguistically uniform than Bengaluru, with Malayalam dominant across age groups and a strong local culture of film, music and humour. Malayalam content using local idiom usually feels more native than English, even to highly educated audiences.

One practical gap: Meta's January 2026 Reels translation expansion did not include Malayalam. For Kochi brands, that means producing Malayalam content natively rather than relying on platform dubbing, which is usually the better choice anyway. Kerala also has large Gulf-linked families, so content often travels between Kochi and the UAE; brands serving Malayali audiences in both can coordinate with our UAE social media team.

What is the difference between transcreation and translation?

Translation converts words while keeping the meaning; transcreation recreates the message so it has the same effect in another culture, which may mean changing the joke, the example, the visual or the offer.

When to translate and when to transcreate
Content typeApproachWhy
Product specs, policies, FAQs, help articlesTranslation (AI plus native review)Accuracy matters more than flair
Ad hooks, taglines, campaign ideasTranscreation by a native writerHumour and rhythm rarely survive literal translation
Reels and short videoWrite natively in the target languageOn-screen text, voice and references must feel local
Long-form videoNative version for flagships; dubbing for the back catalogueBalances quality and cost
WhatsApp and support messagesTranslated templates, reviewed for toneClear and polite beats clever

For example, an English line such as "Your weekend just got an upgrade" may translate correctly into Kannada or Malayalam and still land flat. A transcreator might anchor it in a familiar local weekend ritual or phrase instead. That judgement is what you pay a native writer for.

Where do AI translation tools such as Bhashini help?

AI tools are good for first drafts, subtitles and scaling factual content; they still need native review for anything persuasive or regulated. Bhashini is the Government of India's language technology platform, run by the Digital India Bhashini Division under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and launched in July 2022. According to UNICEF's profile of Bhashini, it offers text translation across 22 Indian languages and voice-to-text, text-to-voice and voice-to-voice services in 12, with tools for text, document and video translation. Coverage changes, so check the current list before planning around it.

Where AI translation, including Bhashini, platform dubbing and commercial language models, works well:

  • First drafts of FAQs, product descriptions and support replies.
  • Subtitles and transcripts that a native speaker then corrects.
  • Scaling a catalogue or help centre into several languages quickly.
  • Understanding incoming customer messages in languages your team does not read.

Where it still needs a human: humour, slang, emotional storytelling, regulated claims in finance, health or education, and anything carrying your brand name in large type. Our article on generative AI content and brand safety sets out a review workflow.

How should a brand start with regional languages?

  1. Check the data. Look at customer addresses, CRM fields, call-centre language requests and ad audience breakdowns. Choose one or two languages with real demand.
  2. Pick one channel. Instagram Reels or YouTube Shorts are cheap places to test; our Instagram Reels strategy explains trial reels for language tests.
  3. Hire or contract native writers. Brief them on the brand and the customer, not on literal copy.
  4. Build a glossary. Fix how product names, key terms and tone are handled in each language.
  5. Localise the whole path. A Kannada ad that leads to an English-only form loses people. Translate the landing page, form labels and WhatsApp replies too; our WhatsApp chatbot guide covers multilingual flows.

How should you resource a second language?

Plan for the second language as an ongoing workstream, not a one-off translation job. Every post, ad variant, landing page update and WhatsApp template now exists twice, and each version needs a native reviewer before it goes live. A simple rule we use: if you cannot commit to at least a few pieces a week in the new language for three months, run a smaller, time-boxed test on one channel instead. It is better to do one language well than three languages inconsistently, because audiences notice when a brand speaks their language only at festival time.

Common mistakes

  • Translating an English script word for word and calling it regional content.
  • Using a formal, textbook register when customers speak a mixed, informal one.
  • Launching in five languages at once with no budget to maintain any of them.
  • Relying on automatic dubbing for flagship brand videos without a native review.

How do you measure regional language content?

Treat language as a controlled variable: run the same idea in English and the regional language, with the same audience, budget and timing, and compare.

  • Attention: watch time, retention and shares per reach for each version.
  • Cost: cost per lead or per click in paid tests split by language.
  • Conversion: form completion and WhatsApp reply rates on localised versus English pages.
  • Quality: lead quality and repeat purchase by language, recorded in your CRM.
  • Search: impressions for regional-language and transliterated queries in Search Console, which feeds local SEO for Bengaluru and Kochi.

Give each test enough time and spend to be meaningful, and record results in a shared sheet so the next campaign starts smarter.

How we approach this at Old Port

We start from customer data, not from a list of languages. We check which languages customers already use with the business, write the core idea once in plain terms, and then have native writers in Bengaluru and Kochi build each language version from that idea rather than from English copy. AI translation handles factual material, always with a native reviewer. Our social media management and creative direction teams produce multilingual campaigns, and our AI solutions team connects translation tools to websites and WhatsApp flows.

Frequently asked questions

What percentage of Indian internet users prefer regional languages?

The IAMAI and Kantar Internet in India 2024 report found that 57% of internet users prefer to access content in regional languages. The figure comes from a large survey across urban and rural India. It suggests that English-only marketing misses a majority of online users in many categories, especially outside the largest metros and among rural audiences.

What is the difference between translation and transcreation?

Translation converts text from one language into another while keeping the meaning accurate. Transcreation recreates a message so it has the same emotional effect in a different culture, which may mean new jokes, examples, visuals or offers. Use translation for specifications and support content, and transcreation for ads, taglines and social video.

What is Bhashini?

Bhashini is the Government of India's AI language technology platform, run by the Digital India Bhashini Division under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and launched in July 2022. It offers text translation across 22 Indian languages and speech services in 12, through APIs and tools. Check the current language list before planning around it.

Which language should a Bengaluru business use for marketing?

It depends on the customer. A Census 2011 analysis found 107 languages in Bengaluru, with Kannada the largest at about 44.5% of speakers, followed by Tamil and Telugu. Kannada builds local trust, English reaches the professional workforce, and Tamil or Telugu may suit specific segments. Use your own customer data to choose, then test.

Can AI dub Instagram Reels into Malayalam?

Not in Meta's January 2026 expansion, which added Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi and Kannada to Hindi, English, Spanish and Portuguese for Reels translation. Brands targeting Kerala should produce Malayalam content natively, which generally performs better than automated dubbing anyway. Check Meta's current language list, as support expands over time.

How many people in India watch short videos?

The IAMAI and Kantar Internet in India 2025 report, as summarised by Business Today, found about 588 million users, roughly 61% of the internet population, consume short-form video, with rural users slightly outnumbering urban ones. That makes Reels and Shorts a natural place to test regional-language content before investing in longer formats.
