YouTube in India: Shorts vs Long-Form Video for Brands

Shorts and long-form do different jobs. Here is how Indian brands can use each, link them together and measure what matters, using what YouTube has actually published.

The short answer

For most Indian brands the answer is Shorts feeding long-form, not one or the other. Shorts, now up to three minutes, reach new viewers on mobile; YouTube reported more than 650 million logged-in monthly Shorts viewers in India in 2025. Long-form builds trust, ranks in search and plays on TVs. Test ideas in Shorts, link each to a related long video, and judge success on subscribers, watch time and enquiries.

Key takeaways

  • YouTube said in September 2025 that Shorts had more than 650 million logged-in monthly viewers in India and that about 75 million Indian adults watched YouTube on connected TVs in April 2025.
  • Since 15 October 2024, Shorts can be up to three minutes long if the video is square or vertical.
  • From 31 March 2025, a Shorts view counts every start or replay, while monetisation and Partner Programme eligibility stay tied to engaged views.
  • Shorts partners keep 45% of their allocated share of pooled Shorts ad revenue, allocated by their share of Shorts views.
  • The related video link lets a Short send viewers directly to a long-form video on the same channel.

Most Indian brands should use YouTube Shorts and long-form video together: Shorts to reach people who do not know you yet, and long-form to earn their trust, answer search queries and win the sale. Shorts are quick to make and spread fast on mobile; long-form videos rank in YouTube and Google search, play on living-room TVs and keep attracting viewers for years. The practical system is "hub and spoke": one long video per topic, several Shorts cut from the same shoot, each linked back to the hub. This article compares the two formats using figures YouTube and Google have published.

How big is YouTube in India?

Very large on every measure, though the published figures count different things. At Brandcast in September 2025, Google said Shorts had more than 650 million logged-in monthly viewers in India (internal data, June 2025) and that about 75 million Indian adults watched YouTube on connected TVs in April 2025, according to Google's India blog. A Google and MTM survey in the same post found 87% of Indian viewers were much more likely to use YouTube daily than other online platforms or TV and video on demand.

Separately, DataReportal's Digital 2026: India report put YouTube's advertising reach at 500 million people in late 2025, about 48.7% of India's internet users, the largest reported ad reach of any social platform. Logged-in viewers and ad-eligible reach measure different audiences, so do not add or compare them directly.

What counts as a YouTube Short in 2026?

A Short is a square or vertical video of up to three minutes shown in the swipeable Shorts feed. The three-minute limit applies to uploads from 15 October 2024, as announced on the official YouTube blog. Long-form means standard uploads that live on the watch page, in search results, on the home feed and on TV screens.

How do Shorts and long-form compare for brands?

Shorts are good at being found; long-form is good at being chosen.

Why does long-form still matter for Indian brands?

Because buying decisions in India are researched on YouTube, and long videos are what answer that research.

  • Search intent. Indian buyers research on YouTube before buying anything from a two-wheeler to accounting software. A 10-minute comparison or walkthrough answers that intent; a 20-second clip rarely does.
  • The TV screen. With around 75 million Indian adults watching YouTube on connected TVs, long-form is family-room viewing. That suits home improvement, education, food and finance. Google also announced immersive connected TV mastheads and India-first urban and rural ad targeting at Brandcast 2025, as afaqs reported.
  • Depth builds trust. For higher-value or complex products, buyers want to see the product, the people and the reasoning.
  • AI search visibility. Clearly titled long videos with chapters and accurate transcripts give search engines and AI assistants more to understand and cite. See our guide to generative engine optimisation.

How do Shorts and long-form work together?

Link every Short to a related long video, and let Shorts performance tell you which long videos to make next. Since 2023, creators can attach a related video link to a Short that sends viewers to a long-form video, livestream or another Short on the channel, as Tubefilter reported.

The hub-and-spoke workflow we use:

  1. Plan one long-form hub video per fortnight around a real buyer question, for example "How to choose a home water purifier in Bengaluru".
  2. Script 4 to 6 Shorts from the same shoot, each making one sharp point from the hub: a myth, a number, a quick test.
  3. Link every Short to the hub with the related video feature.
  4. Publish Shorts before and after the hub to build curiosity and keep it circulating.
  5. Use Shorts as idea tests. When a Short performs far above average, that topic deserves its own long video.

The same footage can be adapted for Instagram, but edit natively for each platform rather than cross-posting watermarked files. Our Instagram Reels strategy guide covers the differences.

Does YouTube monetisation matter for brands?

For most brands, ad revenue from their own channel is a bonus, but the rules shape how creators behave, which matters when you work with them. According to TechCrunch's report on the Partner Programme expansion, channels can qualify through Shorts with 1,000 subscribers and 10 million Shorts views in 90 days, or through long-form with 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours. Shorts ad revenue is pooled each month, and partners keep 45% of their share, allocated by their portion of total Shorts views.

The practical point: Shorts and long-form pay creators on different models, so ask how each format fits a creator's business before you negotiate. Many treat Shorts as a growth engine and long-form as their core product. An integration inside a long video also gives you minutes rather than seconds to explain why the product matters.

Which metrics should brands track on YouTube?

Track engaged views, retention and business outcomes rather than raw views. From 31 March 2025, YouTube counts a Shorts view every time a Short starts or replays, with no minimum watch time. The older measure remains as "engaged views" in advanced analytics, and monetisation and Partner Programme eligibility stay tied to engaged views, as PPC Land explains. If your Shorts views jumped in 2025, that is partly a counting change.

  • Shorts: engaged views, viewed versus swiped away, subscribers gained, and clicks on the related video link.
  • Long-form: average view duration, retention at the 30-second mark, impression click-through rate and traffic from YouTube search.
  • Business: website sessions and enquiries from UTM-tagged description links, and branded search lift during campaigns.

Should Indian brands dub their YouTube videos?

Often, yes, with a native-speaker check on anything important. In February 2026, YouTube expanded AI auto-dubbing to all channels with 27 languages, and said it was testing lip sync, according to India TV News. Automatic dubbing is a useful start for reach, but for flagship videos record a native-speaker version or have a native speaker review the dub. Our article on regional language marketing in India explains when translation is enough and when you need transcreation.

What mistakes do Indian brands make on YouTube?

  • Uploading TV commercials as the whole strategy. A channel of 30-second ads gives viewers no reason to subscribe or return.
  • Cross-posting Reels with another app's watermark. Export clean files and adjust captions and pacing.
  • Vague titles. "Our new launch" tells search nothing. Name the product, the problem and the audience.
  • No chapters or description. Chapters, a clear description and accurate captions help viewers and help YouTube understand the video.
  • Judging Shorts by a single upload. Review ten or more Shorts per theme before deciding a topic does not work.
  • Ignoring comments. Questions under a video are free research for the next hub.

So which should your brand prioritise?

  • New brand, low awareness: lead with Shorts (three to four a week), plus one long-form hub a month.
  • Considered purchase or B2B: lead with long-form (two a month), with Shorts cut from each video.
  • Established brand with a TV audience: invest in longer, higher-production videos designed for the big screen, and use Shorts to promote them.

How we approach this at Old Port

We plan YouTube around the questions buyers type, not around the content calendar. We list those questions from sales calls, comments and search data, script one hub video per question, and cut Shorts during the same shoot so production cost stays low. Shorts results then decide the next hub topics. Our creative direction and content production team in Bengaluru and Kochi plans and shoots these programmes, and our performance marketing team runs YouTube ads that amplify proven videos. If you also run video for the Gulf, our UAE content production team works from the same playbook.

Frequently asked questions

How long can a YouTube Short be in 2026?

Since 15 October 2024, YouTube Shorts can be up to three minutes long, as long as the video is square or vertical. Videos uploaded before that date were not affected. Even with the higher limit, many effective brand Shorts are well under a minute, because they communicate one idea quickly and are easy to rewatch and share.

How many people watch YouTube Shorts in India?

At Brandcast in September 2025, Google said YouTube Shorts had more than 650 million logged-in monthly viewers in India, based on June 2025 internal data, and that about 75 million Indian adults watched YouTube on connected TVs in April 2025. These are YouTube's own figures and measure different audiences from third-party advertising reach estimates.

Are YouTube Shorts better than long videos for brands?

Neither is better in general. Shorts are best for discovery and reaching people who have never heard of you. Long-form is better for trust, search visibility and conversions, and it plays on TV screens. Most brands do best using Shorts to test ideas and send viewers, through the related video link, to long-form videos on the same topic.

Why did my YouTube Shorts views go up in 2025?

From 31 March 2025, YouTube counts a Shorts view every time a Short starts or replays, with no minimum watch time. The older, stricter measure is still available as engaged views in advanced analytics, and monetisation stays tied to engaged views. Compare engaged views over time to judge whether performance really changed.

How do Shorts earn money on YouTube?

Shorts ad revenue is pooled each month and shared with Partner Programme creators according to their share of total Shorts views, with creators keeping 45% of their allocation. Channels can qualify through Shorts with 1,000 subscribers and 10 million Shorts views in 90 days, or through long-form with 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours.

Can YouTube dub my videos into Indian languages automatically?

YouTube expanded AI auto-dubbing to all channels in February 2026 with support for 27 languages, and said it was testing lip sync. It is a useful way to extend reach for existing videos. For flagship brand content, record a native-speaker version or have a native speaker review the dub, because tone and idiom often need human judgement.
