How Much Does App Development Cost in India in 2026?

A practical way to estimate what your app will cost in India in 2026: scope tiers, the features that quietly double budgets, store and platform fees, and the running costs most quotes leave out.

App wireframes, a smartphone, a calculator and coins for estimating app development cost in India

The short answer

App development cost in India is driven by scope, not city or vendor: effort in person-weeks across design, build, testing and project management, multiplied by the team's blended rate, plus a risk buffer. Add fixed platform fees (a one-time US$25 Google Play registration and US$99 a year for Apple's Developer Program), store commissions of 15% to 30% on digital sales, and yearly hosting and maintenance.

Key takeaways

  • Scope, not technology, is the biggest driver of app cost: every user role, integration and offline requirement adds person-weeks.
  • Google Play charges a one-time US$25 registration fee; the Apple Developer Program costs US$99 a year.
  • In India, store commissions on digital sales are 15% for subscriptions and smaller developers and up to 30% otherwise; Google's new 10% plus 5% fee model reaches the rest of the world in September 2027.
  • Android held 94.84% of India's mobile OS share in October 2026 (StatCounter), so testing on mid-range Android phones is a real cost line.
  • Store rules change every year (Android 16 target API from 31 August 2026, Xcode 26 from 28 April 2026), so maintenance is recurring, not optional.

An app in India costs whatever its scope requires: the person-weeks of discovery, design, development, testing and project management, multiplied by the team's rate, plus a buffer for unknowns and a small set of fixed platform fees. A three-screen booking tool and a two-sided marketplace with payments and an admin panel are different projects, which is why five agencies give five numbers. This guide shows how quotes are built, which features drive cost, the 2026 platform fees we verified, the running costs most quotes omit, and a worksheet that makes vendor quotes comparable.

We have deliberately not published a rupee price list. Rates vary widely by seniority, location and engagement model, and a single figure would mislead more people than it helps. You can take everything below to any vendor, including us.

How is app development cost calculated?

Almost every serious quote, fixed price or time and materials, is effort multiplied by rate, plus a risk buffer and fixed costs. Lowering effort and uncertainty saves more than haggling on rate.

  • Effort: person-weeks for discovery, UI/UX design, mobile front end, back end and APIs, quality assurance and project management.
  • Rate: a blended weekly or monthly rate for the team doing that work.
  • Risk buffer: contingency for unknowns, larger when the scope is vague.
  • Fixed costs: store accounts, paid SDKs, design assets, cloud services.

The quickest way to lower a quote is to remove features from the first release and write a clearer scope. A vendor who quotes without asking questions has simply priced the uncertainty in.

What changes between an MVP and a full product?

A minimum viable product (MVP) lets real users complete one core job so you can learn whether they want it. A full product adds roles, platforms, admin tooling and a higher quality bar, and that is where budgets multiply.

MVP versus full product: what each scope usually includes
DimensionMVPFull product
User rolesOne (for example, customer only)Several (customer, provider, admin, support)
PlatformsOften Android first, or one cross-platform codebaseAndroid, iOS and web, each store-ready
Admin toolsSpreadsheet or basic dashboardFull admin panel with permissions and audit logs
PaymentsOne gateway, simple flowRefunds, subscriptions, invoices, reconciliation
AnalyticsCore funnel eventsAttribution, cohorts, experimentation
Quality barWorks well on target devicesAccessibility, localisation, performance budgets, crash-free targets

For Indian consumer apps, "target devices" deserves real thought. StatCounter put Android at 94.84% of mobile OS usage in India in October 2026, against 5.1% for iOS. Testing on entry-level and mid-range Android phones, on patchy networks, adds QA effort that a quote should show. Our comparison of Flutter, React Native and native covers how stack choice affects that.

Which features drive app cost the most?

Real-time features, money movement, multiple user roles, offline sync, third-party integrations, AI features, regional languages and compliance work consume a disproportionate share of effort. Flag them before asking for quotes.

  1. Real-time features: chat, live tracking or collaborative editing need sockets, presence logic and testing on weak networks.
  2. Payments and money movement: integrating a UPI-capable gateway is quick; refunds, partial payments, vendor payouts and reconciliation are not.
  3. Multiple user roles: each role is effectively another app inside your app, with its own screens, permissions and edge cases.
  4. Offline support and sync: letting users work without a connection and merging changes later is one of the hardest problems in mobile.
  5. Third-party integrations: CRMs, ERPs, logistics or government APIs often have thin documentation and sandboxes that behave differently from production.
  6. AI features: a chatbot or recommendation engine adds prompt design, evaluation, safety filters and usage costs, and Google Play's AI-generated content policy expects a way for users to report offensive output.
  7. Regional languages: translation is the small part; layout testing for longer strings and different scripts is the larger one.
  8. Compliance work: consent flows, data retention and account deletion. Most obligations under India's DPDP Rules apply from 13 May 2027, per Privacy Labs, so design for them now. See our DPDP compliance guide.

What are the Google Play and App Store fees in 2026?

Expect US$25 once for Google Play, US$99 a year for Apple, and a commission of 15% to 30% on digital goods and subscriptions sold inside the app. Physical goods and services paid through your own gateway are not subject to store commission.

What about Google's new fee model?

Google has split its fee into a service fee (10% on the first US$1 million and on subscriptions) and a separate 5% billing fee for Google Play Billing. It took effect in the US, UK and EEA on 30 June 2026 and, according to Outlook Respawn, reaches the rest of the world on 30 September 2027. India is not named separately, so plan on the current rates above until Google confirms India's date in Play Console.

Note the time cost too. Personal Google Play accounts created after 13 November 2023 must run a closed test with at least 12 testers for 14 continuous days before production access. Our app store launch checklist explains how to plan for it.

What does an app cost to run after launch?

Launch is roughly the midpoint of the budget conversation. Hosting, third-party services, store renewals, mandatory platform updates, maintenance and growth all recur every year.

  • Hosting and back end: cloud servers or a backend-as-a-service, databases, storage, CDN. Cost scales with users and media.
  • Third-party services: SMS OTP, push notifications, maps, email, analytics, crash reporting, AI model usage. Many are cheap at low volume and expensive at scale, so model them per active user.
  • Store memberships: the Apple fee renews yearly; letting it lapse removes your apps from sale.
  • Mandatory platform updates: Google Play requires new apps and updates to target Android 16 (API level 36) from 31 August 2026, with extensions available to 1 November 2026. Apple has required builds made with Xcode 26 and the iOS 26 SDK since 28 April 2026. These deadlines arrive every year whether or not you planned a release.
  • Maintenance and support: OS updates, library upgrades, security patches and bug fixes. Agree a monthly retainer or block of hours rather than paying ad hoc.
  • Growth: app store optimisation, paid acquisition and content. An app nobody finds has an infinite cost per user.

What should you send vendors to get comparable quotes?

Send every vendor the same written scope. These eleven items remove most of the guesswork that inflates risk buffers.

  1. Problem and user: one paragraph on who the app is for and the single job it must do well.
  2. Success metric: the number that tells you the MVP worked (activation, repeat bookings, paid conversions).
  3. Platforms: Android, iOS, web, or a progressive web app first. Our PWA vs native guide can help.
  4. User roles: each role and its top five actions.
  5. Screen list: rough flows. Twenty screens and sixty screens are different projects.
  6. Integrations: payment gateway, CRM, WhatsApp, maps, logistics, accounting, with links to API docs.
  7. Data and compliance: personal data collected, whether children may use the app, retention, and account deletion.
  8. Content and languages: who writes copy, which languages, who supplies images.
  9. Non-functional needs: minimum devices, offline behaviour, peak users, accessibility.
  10. Must, should, could: sort every feature. Only "must" goes into the MVP quote.
  11. Post-launch: who hosts, who owns store accounts and source code, and the support needed for six months.

When quotes come back, ask each vendor for the effort breakdown by role and phase, their assumptions, and what is excluded. Those three lists explain almost every price gap.

How can you reduce app cost without hurting quality?

Cut scope, not quality: one platform first, managed services instead of custom builds, and design validated in prototypes before code.

  • Launch one platform or one cross-platform codebase first, chosen by where your users are.
  • Use managed services for authentication, notifications and storage instead of building them.
  • Run admin work through an existing tool for the first few months.
  • Prototype in Figma first: changing a design is far cheaper than changing shipped code.
  • Keep store accounts, source code and cloud billing in your company's name from day one.

Common mistakes we see: comparing quotes with different exclusions, skipping QA on low-end Android devices, and forgetting the annual Apple renewal and SDK deadlines in the year-two budget.

How we approach this at Old Port

We do not quote a build from a one-line brief. Our app development team runs a short Discover and Define phase that produces a scope like the worksheet above, a clickable prototype from our UI/UX team, and an effort breakdown with stated assumptions and exclusions. Our view is that a smaller first release, shipped and measured, beats a feature-complete plan that runs out of budget. We build our own apps too, including MindHarbor, so platform deadlines and store reviews are part of our routine. Frequently asked questions

How much does a simple app cost in India in 2026?

There is no reliable single figure because rates vary widely by team and engagement model. Estimate it as person-weeks of design, build, testing and project management multiplied by the team rate, then add store fees (US$25 once for Google Play, US$99 a year for Apple) and running costs. A clear written scope keeps the contingency, and therefore the quote, smaller.

Is it cheaper to build for Android only first?

Often yes for Indian consumer apps. StatCounter put Android at about 95% of mobile OS usage in India in October 2026, and starting with Android avoids the yearly Apple fee and a second round of store testing. A cross-platform framework such as Flutter or React Native makes adding iOS later cheaper, but iOS still needs its own testing and store compliance work.

What ongoing costs should I budget for after launch?

Plan for cloud hosting, third-party services such as OTP, maps, push notifications and AI usage, the yearly Apple Developer Program renewal, mandatory platform updates such as Google Play target API levels and Apple SDK minimums, security patches, bug fixes and growth marketing. A monthly maintenance retainer or block of hours is usually more predictable than paying for fixes as they arise.

Why do app development quotes in India vary so much?

Vendors make different assumptions about scope, quality, devices tested and exclusions, and they price uncertainty into a contingency buffer. Sending every vendor the same written scope with must, should and could features, then asking for an effort breakdown by role plus a list of assumptions and exclusions, makes the quotes directly comparable.

Do Google Play and the App Store take a commission in India?

Yes, on digital goods and subscriptions sold in the app, not on physical goods or services. Google Play charges 15% on subscriptions and on the first US$1 million of other earnings, and user choice billing in India cuts that by 4 points. Apple charges 15% to Small Business Program members and 30% otherwise, with subscriptions falling to 15% after a year.

Will Google Play fees in India drop to 10% in 2026?

Not yet. Google's new model, a 10% service fee plus a separate 5% fee for Google Play Billing, started in the US, UK and EEA on 30 June 2026. Reports put the rest of the world, which would include India, on 30 September 2027. Until Google confirms India's date in Play Console, budget on the current 15% and 30% rates.
