## Short answer

Local SEO in Bengaluru and Kochi comes down to five things: a complete, verified Google Business Profile with the most specific primary category; a steady flow of genuine reviews requested from every customer without incentives; identical name, address and phone details everywhere; a useful page for each real location or service area; and content that answers the Kannada, Malayalam and mixed-language queries customers actually use.

## Key takeaways

- Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence, and says more reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking.
- Google's guidelines say to use as few categories as possible, as specific as possible, and to keep keywords and locations out of the business name.
- Google's review policy bans incentives, selective solicitation, staff review quotas, pressure on the premises and reviews from current or former employees.
- Profiles linked to fake engagement can be blocked from new reviews, have existing reviews unpublished and show a public warning.
- Google AI Mode has worked in Kannada and Malayalam since October 2025, so regional-language answers on your site and profile matter more.

To rank locally in Bengaluru or Kochi, get five things right: a verified, complete Google Business Profile with a precise primary category; a steady stream of genuine reviews requested from every customer; the same name, address and phone number everywhere; a genuinely useful page for each real branch or service area; and answers to the Kannada, Malayalam and mixed-language questions people actually ask. Bengaluru tends to be dense, English-heavy and category-crowded; Kochi has more Malayalam and mixed-language searching. The mechanics are the same, and this is the playbook we use from our studios in both cities.

## How does Google decide which local businesses to show?

Google weighs relevance, distance and prominence. You cannot change distance, so the work is in relevance and prominence.

Google's own [guidance on improving local ranking](https://support.google.com/business/answer/7091?hl=en) defines the three:

- **Relevance:** how well your profile matches the search. Categories, services, descriptions and website content drive it.

- **Distance:** how far you are from the searcher or the place in their query. Make your location data unambiguous.

- **Prominence:** how well known you are. Google names links from other websites and your review count, and says more reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking.

Distance is why a Koramangala cafe rarely ranks for someone searching in Whitefield, and why "near me" results in Kochi change sharply between Edappally and Fort Kochi. Maximise relevance and prominence within the radius where you genuinely compete.

## What does a complete Google Business Profile look like?

A complete profile is verified, uses your real name, has accurate location and hours, precise categories, real photos and someone who replies.

- **Verify the profile** and check who has owner or manager access. Remove former staff and agencies.

- **Use your real-world business name.** Google's [guidelines for representing your business](https://support.google.com/business/answer/3038177?hl=en) say unnecessary information is not permitted in the name, including keywords and locations, and Google can suspend profiles that break the rules.

- **Set the address or service area correctly.** Storefronts show an address. Service-area businesses that visit customers (pest control, home tutors, interior designers) should hide the address.

- **Choose categories with care** (see below).

- **Complete services and products** with plain descriptions and, where sensible, price ranges.

- **Add accurate hours**, including special hours for Onam, Diwali, Ugadi, Christmas and other closures.

- **Upload real photos** of premises, team and work, and keep adding them.

- **Turn on messaging or WhatsApp links** only if someone will reply quickly.

- **Post updates** for offers, events and new services, which keep the profile fresh for customers.

Google's 2026 guidance on [optimising for generative AI features](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/ai-optimization-guide) also recommends keeping Business Profile information current so businesses can appear in AI responses.

### How should you pick Google Business Profile categories?

The primary category tells Google what you fundamentally are. Google's guidelines say to use as few categories as possible and to choose ones as specific as possible while representing your main business: "Pediatric dentist" rather than "Dentist" if that is genuinely your practice, "Kerala restaurant" rather than "Restaurant". A practical method:

- Search your main service in your area and note the primary categories of the top three map results (third-party browser tools can reveal them).

- List every category that honestly describes what you do.

- Choose the primary category by revenue, not vanity, and review it each quarter.

## What are the rules on asking for Google reviews?

Ask every customer, offer nothing in return, and never filter who gets the link.

Google's [prohibited and restricted content policy](https://support.google.com/contributionpolicy/answer/7400114?hl=en) says merchants must not:

- Offer incentives such as payment, discounts, free goods or services for posting, changing or removing a review.

- Discourage negative reviews or selectively solicit positive ones, which rules out "review gating".

- Set targets for staff to collect a certain number of reviews.

- Pressure customers to review while on the premises, or ask them to include specific content.

- Post or encourage reviews from people with a conflict of interest, including current or former employees.

[Search Engine Roundtable reported on 20 February 2026](https://www.seroundtable.com/google-business-profile-review-policies-updated-40962.html) that Google updated these policies, adding language on unusual volumes or patterns of reviews. Enforcement is real: under its fake engagement policy, Google can block new reviews for a period, unpublish existing ones and show a public warning, as [PinMeTo summarised in June 2026](https://www.pinmeto.com/news/google-incentivized-reviews-penalty-2026/).

### What does a compliant review request look like?

A short, neutral WhatsApp message works: "Thank you for visiting us today. If you have a minute, we would value your honest feedback on Google: [link]. Reply here if anything was not right and we will fix it." It goes to every customer, offers nothing, does not ask for five stars and gives unhappy customers a direct line without blocking the review link.

A printed QR code at the counter is fine; standing over someone while they type is not. Reply to every review within a few days, in the reviewer's language. Our article on [marketing automation workflows](/insights/marketing-automation-workflows/) shows how to automate a compliant review request.

## Why does NAP consistency still matter?

When name, address and phone differ across listings, search engines, AI assistants and customers all have to guess.

NAP inconsistencies across your website, Google Business Profile, Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMART, Practo, Zomato, social profiles and directories weaken trust in your details and send customers to old numbers.

- Pick one canonical format, for example "No. 12, 3rd Cross, Indiranagar, Bengaluru 560038", and use it everywhere.

- Use one primary phone number in listings; tracking numbers belong in ads, not citations.

- Audit the top 20 to 30 listings for your category once a year and after any move.

- Add LocalBusiness structured data with the same details; our [technical SEO checklist](/insights/technical-seo-checklist-2026/) covers validation.

## How should you build local landing pages?

Build a page only for a place you genuinely serve, and make it useful to someone there.

Google's [spam policies](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/essentials/spam-policies) list pages "targeted at specific regions or cities that funnel users to one page" as doorway abuse. The test for each page: would a customer in that area find something here they could not find on any other page?

| Element | Strong local page | Doorway page to avoid |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Reason to exist | A real branch, team or regular service in that area | A list of every neighbourhood you could theoretically reach |
| Content | Address, hours, staff, photos, directions, area-specific FAQs | The same text with the area name swapped |
| Proof | Reviews and projects from that area | Generic testimonials |
| Links | Linked from the matching Google Business Profile | Orphaned, reachable only from the footer |

For a business with a Bengaluru studio and a Kochi studio, two strong city pages beat forty thin neighbourhood pages.

## How do Kannada and Malayalam searches change local SEO?

People increasingly search and ask AI in Kannada, Malayalam and mixed English, so your site and profile should answer in those languages too.

Many people type English words in Malayalam or Kannada script, use transliterated phrases such as "nalla dentist near me", or speak queries. Google AI Mode added Kannada and Malayalam on [8 October 2025](https://techcrunch.com/2025/10/08/googles-search-live-comes-to-india-ai-mode-gets-more-languages), which makes regional-language content more visible in AI answers.

- Add a short Malayalam or Kannada section on city pages covering what you do, where and when, written by a fluent speaker.

- Collect the phrases customers use on calls and WhatsApp, and answer them in FAQs.

- Reply to regional-language reviews in the same language.

- If you create full regional-language pages, use hreflang correctly.

Our guide to [regional language content in India](/insights/regional-language-content-india/) goes deeper.

## What local SEO mistakes do Bengaluru and Kochi businesses make?

- Adding "Best" or the area name to the business name field.

- Sending review links only to customers who rated 4 or 5 in a survey.

- Running two profiles for one location after a move, splitting reviews.

- Listing a co-working address the business does not staff.

- Leaving festival closures off the hours, then collecting "it was shut" reviews.

## What should a monthly local SEO routine include?

- Check the profile for unwanted edits suggested by Google or users.

- Reply to all new reviews and questions.

- Publish at least two posts and new photos.

- Review profile performance: calls, direction requests, website clicks.

- Track map-pack rankings for 10 to 20 core terms from several points in the city, not just your office.

## How we approach local SEO at Old Port

We start with a profile and citation audit, fix name, category and NAP issues before anything else, then build one strong page per real location with native-language sections, and finally set up a compliant review request. Monthly, we look at calls and direction requests rather than rankings alone. Our [SEO and GEO team](/services/seo-geo/) works with businesses across Bengaluru and Kochi, and businesses also trading in the Gulf can see how our UAE colleagues run [local SEO and AI search visibility in the UAE](https://oldport.ae/services/seo-geo/).

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I offer a discount in exchange for a Google review?

No. Google's policy prohibits offering incentives such as payment, discounts, free goods or free services in exchange for posting, changing or removing a review. Breaching it can lead to removed reviews, a temporary block on new reviews and a public warning on your profile. Ask every customer for honest feedback with no reward attached.

### Can I add Bengaluru or Kochi to my business name on Google?

Only if the location is genuinely part of your real-world business name, as shown on signage and documents. Google's guidelines say unnecessary information, including keywords and locations, is not permitted in the name, and Google can suspend profiles that break the rules. Put locations in your address, service areas and description instead.

### How many location pages should a local business create?

Create one page for each real branch or area you genuinely and regularly serve, with unique content such as local staff, photos, reviews and directions. Google's spam policies treat multiple near-identical city or region pages that funnel users to one place as doorway abuse, so avoid swapped-name neighbourhood pages.

### Does Google search work in Malayalam and Kannada?

Yes. Google Search has long supported Indian languages, and its AI Mode added Kannada, Malayalam, Bengali, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu on 8 October 2025. Businesses in Kochi and Bengaluru benefit from adding fluent regional-language content on key pages and replying to reviews in the reviewer's own language.

### Can my employees leave reviews for my business?

No. Google's content policy treats reviews from people with a conflict of interest as prohibited, and it names current or former employment as an example. It also bans setting targets for staff to collect reviews. Reviews from staff, owners or their family can be removed and may put your profile at risk.

### How many categories should I choose on Google Business Profile?

As few as possible. Google's guidelines say to use the fewest categories that describe your core business and to choose ones as specific as possible while still representing your main business. Pick the primary category by where most revenue comes from, add secondary ones only for services you really offer, and review quarterly.
